Iranian heavyweight boxer takes silver at IBA Youth World Championships

TEHRAN - Amirreza Malekkhatabi of Iran claimed a historic silver medal in the 2024 IBA Youth Men’s World Boxing Championships Sunday night.

Malekkhatabi was defeated against Uzbekistan’s Khalimjon Mamasoliev in the men’s 92kg final 3:2.

Kyrgyzstan’s Tynstan Alybaev and Kazakhstan’s Rassul Assankhanov won the bronze medals in the weight class.

Mehdi Kazemi in the men’s 51kg and Amir Esmaeili in the men’s +92kg (super heavyweight) had won two bronze medals.

The competition was held at the Budva, Montenegro from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3.

Kazakhstan won the title with six gold medals, one silver and 10 bronzes in the men’s and women’s divisions.

Iran, who had sent four male boxers to the event, finished in 12th place with one silver and two bronzes.

A total of 660 boxers from 88 countries competed in the competition, surpassing the 2022 event which attracted 598 participants from 73 nations.
