Gvelesiani becomes top foreign goalscorer in Persepolis
TEHRAN - Giorgi Gvelesiani became the Persepolis’s leading foreign goalscorer by hitting a winner in 1-0 win over Chadormalu Saturday afternoon.
The Georgian 33-year-old defender scored a late goal against Chadormalu in the 2024-25 Iran’s Persian Gulf Professional League (PGPL), helping his team remain top of the table.
He is also among the five foreign players in Persepolis who has scored goal in Tehran derby. Gvelesiani has scored two goals against Persepolis archrival Esteghlal.
Gvelesiani surpassed Alan Whittle to reach new milestone. The English forward played Persepolis in the 70’s and scored 16 goals for the Iranian giants.
Gvelesiani, 33, joined Persepolis from Sepahan in 2022 and helped the Reds win Iran league twice in the last two seasons, as well as a Hazfi Cup and a Super Cup.
