TEHRAN – The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces released a statement on Saturday to mark Sacred Defense Week.

September 21 marks the start of Sacred Defense Week in Iran, an annual commemoration that honors the Iranian people's courage and sacrifices during Saddam Hussein's imposed war in the 1980s.

The statement by the Armed Forces is as follows:

“This occasion offers a chance to reflect on the heroic sacrifices made by the brave individuals of our homeland, reminding everyone, particularly the youth, that the notion of global arrogance’s invincibility took shape shortly after the Islamic Revolution’s success.

The unwavering resistance and steadfastness of the Iranian people over eight years, along with the numerous achievements during this crucial defensive campaign against worldwide forces, were driven by unity, solidarity, self-confidence, and the strong resolve of our courageous soldiers, the Army, the IRGC, and the dedicated border guards. 

Their resourcefulness, combined with the humble efforts of those engaged in the jihad and popular support, serve as a powerful example of resilience and determination against the challenges posed by adversaries of Islam and the Islamic Revolution in today’s complex defensive and military landscape.

Years after the significant events of the Sacred Defense, the lessons learned and the remarkable successes from that time are evident in the country’s growth and advancements across defensive, scientific, cultural, economic, and technological sectors. These achievements serve as a powerful example of resistance and determination.

The armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran honor the memory of the brave martyrs and proud veterans, acknowledging the importance of their families. They affirm their commitment to maintaining strength and readiness. 

By enhancing their capabilities and active deterrence, they aim to continue on a path of progress and excellence, striving to create a future of peace and lasting security for the nation’s children with unwavering resolve.”
