Israeli siege cuts off water, power in Jenin
The UN human rights office has issued a statement accusing Israel of “unlawful killings” and wreaking “enormous destruction” in the Jenin refugee camp, which is home to about 11,000 Palestinians.
These are the main takeaways:
* Israeli forces have killed at least 12 Palestinians in Jenin, including five who were killed in air attacks and seven who were shot with live ammunition.
* The victims include 83-year-old Tawfiq Ahmad Younis Qandil, who was shot and killed by Israeli snipers on Friday night when he stepped outside to get groceries, according to his family.
* The Israeli military – which has deployed armoured vehicles, bulldozers and snipers, supported by drones and aircraft, to Jenin – has imposed a curfew there and cut off electricity and water supplies in the refugee camp.
* Palestinian residents, medics and UN workers there say they are stuck in their homes without water and food.
* The Israeli military has also bulldozed roads, destroyed public infrastructure on a “massive scale” and damaged private homes as well as a mosque.
* There are reports of Israeli soldiers rounding up dozens of young Palestinians, subjecting them to various forms of mistreatment and taking them to undisclosed locations.
