Prioritizing pro-Israeli alliances: Has the West been taken hostage?
BEIRUT - The October 7 attack by Hamas against Israel has spotlighted the West's unyielding support for Israel, laying bare their double standards on values and human rights.
Despite decades of intervening in other nations' affairs under the banner of democracy and human rights, the West has often turned a blind eye to Israel's actions, even when they violate these very principles.
From colonizing Africa to invading Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, the West has cloaked its actions in the guise of modernism and liberalism. But the recent brutalities in Gaza have pulled the mask off, exposing the West's hypocrisy as they continue to back Israel, come hell or high water.
First off, Israel drove the final nail into the coffin of the nation-state concept with its 2018 "nation-state bill," which effectively enshrines an apartheid regime. The West, usually quick to criticize, didn't bat an eye.
Secondly, Western countries, led by the U.S., frequently use their veto power in the UN to block any anti-Israel resolutions, undermining international organizations. They've stood idly by as Israel labels UNRWA a terrorist organization and targets its facilities in Palestine.
Thirdly, the West has turned a deaf ear to Israel's long-standing occupation of Arab lands. The U.S. has even gone so far as to officially recognize the Golan Heights as part of Israel. This sets a dangerous precedent, eroding their moral authority to oppose territorial invasions by other countries.
Fourthly, Western support for Netanyahu's government and its actions in Palestine has sown seeds of division within their own societies. Pro-human rights groups, especially the youth, are calling out this hypocrisy, but politicians remain beholden to pro-Israeli lobbies.
Lastly, the American political system is heavily influenced by pro-Israel lobbies, making it political suicide for candidates to criticize Israel. This disconnection between public opinion and political action deepens societal rifts and undermines democracy.
In essence, by putting Israel's interests on a pedestal, Western governments have painted themselves into a corner. Their people are waking up to the reality, thanks to alternative media that provide unfiltered information on the atrocities in Palestine. The West's blind allegiance to Israel has not only compromised their values but also jeopardized their credibility on the world stage.
In conclusion, the West's unwavering support for Israel, driven by a mix of fear and vested interests, has left them between a rock and a hard place. Their actions pave the way for more conflict, eroding their moral standing and stirring up domestic unrest. It’s high time they reassess their priorities before the chickens come home to roost.
