Deputy Foreign Ministers convene meeting after martyrdom of Amir Abdollahian
TEHRAN – Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministers held a meeting on Monday following the tragic passing of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who lost his life a day earlier during a plane crash in northwestern Iran.
The meeting was led by Ali Baqeri Kani, who has taken the role of caretaker foreign minister after spending the last three years as Amir Abdollahian’s deputy for political affairs. Various agenda items were discussed during the gathering, and decisions were reached by the diplomats.
Additionally, coordination was established concerning upcoming programs and bilateral diplomatic engagements.
Baqeri Kani, 56, has been acting as Iran’s chief negotiator for reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA, since 2021.
He was also part of the Iranian negotiating team when Saeed Jalili, the then-secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, was in charge of handling the nuclear talks with the European trio - Germany, Britain and France – and the United States during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Along with the Iranian Foreign Minister, President Ebrahim Raisi was also pronounced deceased as a result of a helicopter crash that happened due to severe weather conditions.
