ISLAMABAD The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday rejected the appeal and review petition of the killer of late Sadeq Ganji, the former director of the Iranian Cultural Center in Lahore, capital of Punjab Province.
Ganji was assassinated on December 19, 1990 and a case had been registered against eight persons, including Haq Nawaz, Riaz Basra, Javed Ahmad and five others, all known members of the Sipah-e-Sahaba, Pakistan.
However, five of the accused were set free in the initial hearing while Riaz Basra, now heading the extremist group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, and Javed Ahmad escaped from jail.
The court convicted Haq Nawaz and awarded him death sentence.
However, the convict filed an appeal in the Lahore High Court and then in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
All the appeals were rejected and the higher courts endorsed the sentenced awarded by the Lower Court.
