Leader's Instagram & Facebook pages’ support of Palestine reason behind Meta closing them

Romina Guadalupe Pérez Ramos, Bolivia’s ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran, considers the closure of the Persian and English Instagram and Facebook pages of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khamenei, to be closely related to its support for the oppressed people of Palestine and the publication of content critical of imperialism. The Bolivian ambassador explained these points in an interview with Khamenei.ir.

Romina Perez stated that Meta is trying to restrict the publication of facts not only on the subject of Palestine but across various other topics as well. “They are restricting Instagram and Facebook pages because from Imam Khamenei’s Instagram account, logically, a discourse that is more in line with reality and moral support for the Palestinian people is being published,” she emphasized.

The Bolivian ambassador to Iran added, “In order to silence and censor a person, sometimes they not only close their Instagram account, but also use the worst form of censorship by levying false accusations against them. For example, individuals may get accused of anti-Semitism and hence they are forced to carry the weight of such allegations.”

Perez also considered opposition to imperialism and Zionism to be one of the main reasons for the distortion and censorship carried out by the Western media.

In relation to dealing with these distortions and closing the social media accounts of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the Bolivian ambassador noted: “We should not put ourselves in the position of victims. That’s all I want to say. We must act and be very creative and innovative. We must respond to the West’s attacks and their technology with the strong relationships we have built with our allies.”

Romina Perez, while emphasizing the effectiveness of social media networks as the “fourth power” in countries, argued that companies such as Meta limit any alternative discourse, because “social media networks are now even more decisive than other measures. With a social media network, you can mobilize many people to launch a hybrid war.”

On February 8, 2024, Meta blocked Imam Khamenei’s Persian Instagram page with more than 5 million followers as well as his English Instagram and Facebook pages.
