White House proposes Gaza ceasefire resolution
TEHRAN - Israel’s Western allies, in particular the United States, do not lift a finger to support the Palestinian people unless they face domestic and international pressure.
Since Israel launched its deadly war in Gaza on October 7, the United States has spared no effort to stand by the regime politically and militarily.
Washington provides billions of dollars in military assistance to Tel Aviv every year.
U.S. military funding to Israel exceeded $3.8 billion last year. That was part of a record $38 billion deal over 10 years signed under former president Barack Obama in 2016.
At the weekend, The Wall Street Journal also reported that the White House is preparing to send a new weapons shipment to Israel which is estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars.
Israel has been able to continue its brutal war on Gaza through huge military support by the U.S. and some other Western countries.
Nonetheless, the administration of President Joe Biden has recently been trying to wear a charm offensive with the Palestinian people.
In line with that, he has grown more vocal in expressing concerns over how Israel is conducting the war in Gaza.
“Israel’s military action in Gaza should not proceed…. Israel’s response in Gaza has been over the top”. Biden has made these comments over the past two weeks in reaction to
Netanyahu who has vowed to continue the war in Gaza until achieving “total victory” and “destroying” Hamas, a dream which has remained elusive.
On Monday, reports suggested that the Biden administration has proposed a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council calling for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza.
The proposed draft has also warned against an Israeli ground incursion into the southern city of Rafah, where more than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million population has fled over the past months.
Although it does not call for an immediate and lasting truce, this is the first time the Biden administration is proposing the word “ceasefire” since the Gaza war broke out.
Over the past months, the White House had repeatedly resisted calls for a “ceasefire,” emphasizing what it claims is Israel’s right to defend itself following Hamas’ military operation in southern Israel on October 7.
The Biden administration has also voted against at least two Security Council resolutions on the Gaza war which called for establishing a permanent ceasefire.
Undoubtedly, the draft resolution is not a change in the United States’ strategy towards Israel. It is rather a change in language.
Biden is facing intense heat at home over his administration’s backing of Israel.
pro-Palestinian protests have swept major cities in the United States over the past months.
The White House is ramping up efforts to deal with domestic backlash to its support for Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. It is also attempting to mend ties with Arab and Muslim
American voters can have an important role in deciding whether Biden will win a second term in office in the November presidential election.
Polls show a staggering drop in the percentage of Arab and Muslim Americans willing to vote for Biden.
Likewise, young Americans are also unhappy with Biden’s approach towards Israel. Surveys indicate that more than two-thirds of voters aged 18 to 34 disapprove of Biden’s handling of the war.
This could spell trouble for the 81-year-old president, who can’t afford to lose any coalition of voters if he wants to win reelection.
Moreover, Biden is also facing increasingly vocal opposition from the progressive wing of his own party on what they suggest is the president’s bias toward Israel and against Palestinians.
On the international stage, anti-American sentiment has also been on the rise. The U.S. has been accused of complicity in the Israeli genocide in regular protests that have been held across the world since October.
European countries such as Britain, France and Germany, which are also Israel’s major supporters, have made critical remarks about the Netanyahu regime.
But neither the U.S. nor the trio are willing to take tough measures against Israel including halting military support or imposing sanctions to force it to stop the Gaza war.
Western countries’ criticism of Israel is just a publicity stunt to divert global attention from their complicity in Israel’s massacre of the Palestinian people.
