New BRICS members solidify group's international position, says Russian envoy

TEHRAN - BRICS, a geopolitical bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, welcomed new full members on January 1, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

According to Russian Ambassador to Iran Alexey Dedov, the inclusion of Iran and other nations into the BRICS group strengthens the strategic partnership and enhances the group's international standing. 

Dedov emphasized the significance of this move, stating, "The accession of Iran and other new members to the association strengthens the strategic partnership and international position of this important and reputable forum. In general, international relations are undergoing a deep transformation that reflects the emergence of a more democratic and just world order."

Regarding Iran's perspective, Dedov highlighted its commitment to reducing the influence of Western countries in global affairs. "Like Russia, Iran believes that multilateralism should be cultivated through various formats," the ambassador affirmed.

As Russia holds the BRICS presidency in 2024, Dedov expressed Russia's dedication to collaborating closely with all members, including Iran. 

He outlined the areas of focus within the BRICS framework as politics and security, economics and investment, and humanitarian aid, emphasizing ongoing efforts in these spheres.

BRICS Deputy Finance Ministers convene, Iran's Deputy Minister joins talks

The inaugural meeting of BRICS Deputy Finance Ministers convened with the participation of Ali Fekri, Deputy Minister and Head of the Organization for Investment Economic and Technical Assistance of Iran.

Held during Russia's presidency, the gathering on Wednesday, February 7, saw the attendance of Ali Fekri alongside other deputy ministers of finance and central banks from BRICS member nations.

The meeting's agenda, proposed by Russia, focused on enhancing cooperation among BRICS countries in finance, banking, and investment realms. 

Iran's perspectives were articulated, underscoring the nation's readiness and dedication to actively engage in fostering deeper collaboration within the group.

Particular emphasis was placed on bolstering multilateral financial, investment, and economic initiatives among BRICS members. 

Additionally, the significance of advancing effective and innovative financing mechanisms for infrastructure projects was highlighted by Iran, signaling its support for the BRICS action group's objectives.
