UN has been pushed to the sideline on the Gaza war: Iranian president
TEHRAN – President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran said on Wednesday that the United Nations has lost its effectiveness in the Gaza war and being pushed to the sideline.
Raisi made the remarks in a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
Israel’s genocidal campaign against the besieged enclave of the Gaza Strip has shocked the world. So far, the United States has halted the United Nations Security Council to press the Tel Aviv regime to put an end its massacre of the Palestinians in Gaza.
The Israeli war on the enclave, which has entered its fourth month, has been described as a genocide. Israel has been relentlessly bombarding the Gaza Strip, leaving 25,700 people dead, mostly children and women. In addition, Israel has been starving the coastal enclave that houses 2.3 million population.
"It is a great tragedy that America officially backs the Zionist regime"
The president also said the crimes that are being committed against the Palestinians have worried the Muslim nations and freedom-seeking and conscientious people all around the world.
Raisi also said: “Who cannot be affected by all these crimes! The issue of Palestine has now turned into the first issue of the Islamic world and probably the first issue of the world.”
Iran has been scolding the West, particularly the United States, for backing Israel in its cruel war on Gaza.
“Worse than all these are the crimes that are being done with the support of Israel and certain Western countries,” Raisi remarked.
So far, the United States has blocked all attempts by the UN Security Council to announce a ceasefire in the Israeli war on Gaza. It has also been shipping arms to Israel since October 7.
“It is a great tragedy that America officially backs the Zionist regime. In fact, it is America that is committing these crimes,” the president lamented.
“… more regrettably the associations, international bodies and the United Nations have lost their efficacy and are unable to prevent these crimes that are clear to all.”
“Cutting ties will force Israel to end its crimes in Gaza”
The Iranian president also said cutting the “economic lifelines” to Israel and “severing political ties” with Tel Aviv will surely help the regime to end its crimes in the Gaza Strip.
“We strongly believe that countries that have ties with the Zionist regime can force this regime to end its oppression and crimes” through cutting economic and political ties with Israel, Raisi pointed out.
The president said in his talks with Erdogan the two sides agreed on the need to help “Palestine and the Islamic resistance” front in the face of Israel’s injustice against Palestinians.
“Israel must compensate Palestinians for decades of pillage and murder”
He also said Iran and Turkey strongly believe that the “rights of the Palestinians must be resorted” and those who have committed injustice against them and stolen their lands “must be held accountable”.
Israel must end its occupation of the Palestinian lands, stop its oppression against the Palestinian nation and “compensate” them for more than seven decades of “pillage and murder and driving them out of their homes,” Raisi asserted.
“The continuation of this crime neither brings legitimacy and nor ownership and therefore this injustice must come to an end.”
“Palestinians are winning the war against Israel”
Raisi went on to say that more than 110 days have passed since Israel started war on the people of Gaza but “Palestine is the victor of this battlefield and the Zionists the loser.”
When the far-right government of Benjamin Netanyahu started its cruel war against the Palestinians in Gaza it vowed to “eliminate” Hamas and free all the Israelis held captive in Gaza. According to the Wall Street Journal, Israel has not succeeded to weaken the resistance movement in the tiny coastal strip.
Also, except those Israelis who were released through a temporary ceasefire and mediation by third countries, the Israeli army has not succeeded to free a single hostage.
The Iranian president predicted that “powerful Palestine” will secure more victories in the days ahead.
