Winner of the Schneider Family Book Award, “Cursed” is a heartfelt and humorous novel that follows the journey of fourteen-year-old Erica "Ricky" Bloom, who has recently been diagnosed with a chronic illness. Struggling to cope with the constant pain, a dysfunctional family, and an oblivious crush, Ricky turns to cursing and cutting school as her only means of escape. However, her truancy is discovered, and she must work hard to catch up in school or face the dreaded possibility of repeating ninth grade.
In addition to dealing with her parents' divorce and her sister's departure for college, Ricky feels afraid, angry, and alone. Determined to move forward and refusing to be held back, she begins to realize that she must change the person she has become. With the help of a unique classmate named Oliver, who has also experienced hardship, Ricky's tough exterior gradually softens. As she learns to accept her circumstances and ask for help, she discovers that it doesn't mean giving up but rather finding strength to move forward.
