Iran highlights 'mediated' release of Thai nationals from Gaza
TEHRAN- Iran stated that at Thailand’s request, it acted as a mediator in the Friday release of ten Thai nationals who were detained by Palestinian resistance groups in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said, “Since the first week of the Zionist regime’s war on Gaza and following requests from Thai officials, the issue was jointly pursued by the Islamic Republic of Iran and Qatar.”
According to Hamas, a group of captives captured during its October 7 military operation against Israel were handed over to the Red Cross at the Rafah border crossing and subsequently moved to the Israeli-occupied regions.
There were 13 women and children among them, some of them had dual citizenship. Hamas also freed ten Thai detainees and one Filipino, bringing the total number of Gaza captives liberated to 24.
He confirmed that Hamas authorities were given a list of these captives’ identities so they could look into the matter from a humanitarian standpoint.
The spokesperson clarified that during phone conversations and a meeting in Doha, Qatar, the foreign ministers of Iran and Thailand discussed how Thailand had requested Iran’s assistance in facilitating the release of the detainees.
Kanaani also said that the request has been taken into consideration by Thai authorities, and certain Thai detainees were freed when Israel and Hamas established a cease-fire.
“We have provided lists since the beginning to everyone,” the spokesperson for the Thai Foreign Ministry told Reuters, referring to Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and Iran among others.
The spokesperson added, “Different actors would have different influence on Hamas.”
Twenty Thai nationals, according to the Thai government, are still detained by Hamas.
An Iranian Parliament member announced on Saturday that President Ebrahim Raisi has been conversing with different world leaders via letters to come up with a solution to the crisis.
“The 4-day ceasefire creates a good opportunity to discuss the establishment of a permanent ceasefire between Palestine and the Zionist regime. Palestinians have also finally experienced a respite from the tough situation Israel has put them in,” said Shahriyar Heydari, adding that Iran has always thrown its full weight behind the Palestinian cause and will continue to do so in the future.
At least fifty captives are anticipated to be released during the four-day truce, leaving around 190 additional prisoners in Gaza. 150 Palestinian detainees, all of them were adolescent boys and women, were to be freed in return.
Since October 7, Iran has embarked on an extensive diplomatic campaign aimed at averting the loss of innocent lives in the region. The Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian had undertaken three regional tours, engaging with leaders in Qatar, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey to discuss the ongoing situation.
Following a successful Hamas operation in the occupied territories on October 7, the Israeli regime initiated a devastating bombing campaign against the Gaza Strip. Although this assault came to a temporary halt on Friday, reports have emerged suggesting that the ceasefire was already violated after the regime opened fire on civilians attempting to return to their homes in northern Gaza.
Iran has initiated various efforts to thwart the genocidal attacks on Gaza, actively engaging in discussions with numerous concerned parties to find a solution to the escalating crisis.
