'G7 expected to take accountability, renounce backing for slaughter in Gaza'
TEHRAN- Iran has asserted that while the Israeli regime continues its illegal actions against the besieged Strip, the Group of Seven (G7) was supposed to uphold its international obligations regarding Israel’s war crimes and denounce the genocide occurring in Gaza.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
He strongly denounced as groundless a statement by the High Representative of the European Union, the foreign ministers of the G7, and the foreign and defense ministers of Britain and Japan, which levelled accusations against the Islamic Republic.
Kanaani noted that the G7 foreign ministers were supposed to fulfill their obligations, denounce Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip that violate human and international rights, and stop endorsing Tel Aviv’s war crimes and genocide in the blockaded region.
In addition, he said, the ministers were supposed to work on “immediately and unconditionally” ending the siege of Gaza, ceasing military assaults, and guaranteeing Gazans’ access to international humanitarian supplies.
Additionally, Kanaani rejected as false and ridiculous the claims that Iran’s support for the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement has destabilized the region.
“Since the very first day of the crisis in Gaza, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been making constant efforts to stop the military attacks by the aggressive Zionist regime on Gaza and save the lives of defenseless citizens and residents,” the spokesperson added.
He went on to say that among the crimes the Israeli regime has been committing against the oppressed people of Palestine are the occupation of Palestinian territories, the massacre and genocide of the Palestinian people, the destruction of their homes and farms, attacks on places of worship, hospitals and medical facilities, and actions that violate international law and human rights.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he refuted claims made regarding Iran’s human rights record, stating that the Islamic establishment and the Constitution place a great value on human rights.
Kanaani encouraged the nations who advise Iran to uphold human rights to reconsider their dubious past in this respect and to stop endorsing Israel’s crimes against humanity, including the slaughter of children and the genocide in Gaza.
He reacted to the G7 foreign ministers’ request from Iran to live up to its obligations regarding nuclear non-proliferation and fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“As it has been repeatedly announced, nuclear weapons have no place in the military doctrine of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said, reiterating once again the completely peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear program.
Kanaani stressed, “Iran has fulfilled all its commitments in this regard, which has been verified by the IAEA on several occasions.”
He underlined that one of the main causes of the region’s insecurity and instability is the military presence of extra-regional states, and restated Iran’s foreign policy of promoting security and stability in West Asia.
Kanaani also brushed aside accusations regarding Iran’s alleged support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and interference with vessels’ freedom of navigation, saying all such allegations are baseless and politically-motivated.
