TEHRAN – Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday sent a letter of condolence to the Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi on the passing of his mother. 

“I offer my condolences to you and the other survivors on the passing of your beloved mother, and I pray for the God’s mercy and forgiveness to be bestowed upon her,” reads the message. 

Majidi is the director of the controversial movie “Muhammad (S), the Messenger of God” about the childhood of the Prophet of Islam (S).

His “Children of Heaven” earned Iran’s first Oscar nomination in 1999 and his “The Song of Sparrows” was nominated for a Golden Bear award for best film at the Berlin film festival in 2008.
