Iran freestyle team 3rd at 2023 Asian championships
TEHRAN – Iran freestyle wrestling team finished in third place in the 36th edition of Asian Wrestling Championships.
Combined with its two golds from Thursday, Kazakhstan easily secured the team title with 179 points.
Japan finished second at 129, while Iran slipped to a surprising third with 124, just four points ahead of Mongolia.
Rahman Amouzad claimed a gold at 65kg after beating Tomor-Ochiryn Tulga from Mongolia 3-1 in the final.
Alireza Karimi won a silver, losing to Kazakhstan’s Azamat Dauletbekov 4-1 in the final match of 86kg.
Iran also snatched three bronze medals in the event.
Amirhossein Kavousi in 79kg, Mojtaba Goleij in 97kg and Yasin Rezaei in 61kg won three bronzes.
The competitions brought about 300 wrestlers from 24 countries together in Astana, Kazakhstan from April 9 to14.
The nations competing in Astana will be eligible to compete at the World Championships in September, the first qualifying event for Paris 2024.
