Expert Cheraghpour worries about Queiroz’s tactics

TEHRAN - Iranian football pundit Jalal Cheraghpour believes that Carlos Queiroz will use his old tactical methods and has no innovation for the Iranian national team.

Queiroz's side have been drawn into Group B along with England, the U.S., and Wales in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With less than two months to go until the World Cup, the Iranian football federation decided to appoint Queiroz as head coach of Team Melli as replacement for Dragan Skocic.

“Queiroz had called up almost the same players that Skocic called when he was the coach,” said Cheraghpour in his exclusive interview with Tehran Times.

“So, there is not much difference in the quality of the team because the players are the same, and you cannot change the mindset of the players who are in their twenties or thirties in less than two months,” he stated.

“In my opinion, one point is that maybe the players did not give their best performance under Skocic because they were not happy with Skocic's character and did not have a proper relationship with him, and now Queiroz can take the best from them. However, Skocic booked a place in the 2022 World Cup. If he did not have a good relationship with players, he could not achieve such results," the Iranian expert added.

“By watching Iran friendly games against Uruguay and Senegal in September, you could see that there has been no change in Queiroz's tactical plans, and he will use the same tactics he used in his eight-year tenure in Iran, from 2011 to 2019. He uses a defensive system with the participation of a large number of players in defensive plans. Now, he has returned to Iranian football after three years but has not shown any tactical variety,” concluded Cheraghpour.
