A Man Ostracized by So-Called Liberals and West-Oriented Individuals

That day, the students of Tehran University's College of Education had gathered in front of the notice board. "A Debate between Jalal Al-Ahmad and dean of the college", read a notice on the board. The name of Jalal was enough to prompt the students to look for the subject of the debate. The day of the debate came. The university was full of students, researchers, professors and those interested in the subject.
There were also several loudspeakers fixed in different parts of the building. They discussed the nature and root cause of orientation towards the West. The dean had become angry. Jalal asked: "What government are you talking about? Do you know in which circumstances you are living? The official religion of these people is Shia, but you see that the women attend the centers of higher education without headscarves.
You live in a country whose rulers should be corrected first. I want to say that if this country's religion is Shia, why these girls attend their classes without headscarves." Then he turned to the girls present at the meeting and told them: "Ladies! if you believe in Shia, why have you attended this meeting without headscarves? Now if the government does not follow the principles of Shia, this should be announced so that we would know what to do!" (Based on a memory in the book "the Realm of Al- Ahmad's Thoughts) There are many examples that show that late Jalal Al-Ahmad was very ardent about religious, social and political issues.
He also had high regard for the pen. He believed that the pen is a weapon with which one can either commit a crime or prevent wrongdoing. Here are some examples: "These days, the pen has turned into a weapon. If you play with a weapon, even if it does not hurt your neighbor's child, it will scare away the birds.
The hands which do not know where to use a weapon had better be cut". (The Three-Year Record) "All the words and statements in the world have been made up of these 32 letters of alphabet. In whatever language you write, it does not make much of a difference. But do not let your little knowledge prevent you from observing what is right.
Remember that these same 32 letters are also the tools in the hands of the Devil. So, be careful, don't use your pen in a way in which the 32 letters are in the service of the Devil." (Noon Val-qalam) Due to his characteristics, Jalal was ostracized by the so- called liberals, but he was loved by the common people, particularly the youth.
Al-Ahmad will live forever in the history of Iran, especially in the hearts of the Iranian youth. Regarding Jalal's share in the Islamic Revolution, the Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said: "In my opinion, Jalal's share in the Islamic Revolution is very important and considerable. A revolutionary movement is based on understanding and knowledge. A real intellectual is the one who, in an ignorant society, makes the people aware and lead them to a new path.
And if a movement has already been launched, he tries to deepen such a movement by increasing the awareness of the people. "To achieve this, an intellectual should, in the first place, know his society and be aware of its shortcomings. In the second place, he should know the new path and firmly believe in it. And thirdly, he should take risks and face the problems.
"Al-Ahmad enjoyed the first characteristic completely (in the last and main chapter of his life). He also, to some extent, enjoyed the second and the third characteristics. The presence of such an individual is a great blessing for a nation which is moving toward a full-scale revolution. And Al-Ahmad was in fact a great blessing. He enlightened at least one generation.
This is something considerable for a revolution."
