Iranian fencer Abedini announces retirement

TEHRAN – Iranian sabre fencer Mojtaba Abedini has announced his retirement from the sport aged 34.

Abedini took part in the 2018 Asian Games and claimed a silver medal in the men's team sabre.

He qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics to become the first Iranian fencer to compete at the Olympics.

He also competed in men's sabre event at the 2016 Summer Olympics and reached the semifinals by a series of fine performances against the likes of Andriy Yahodka, Gu Bon-gil and Vincent Anstett but missed the chance to go on the podium when he was defeated by Daryl Homer in the semifinals and Kim Jung-hwan in the bronze medal match.

Iranian woman rower Mahsa Javar also announced her retirement from the sport.

She won a silver medal in the Women's Lightweight Quadruple Sculls at the 2018 Asian Games on Thursday.
