Freestyler Karimi seizes gold for Iran at Asiad

TEHRAN – Alireza Karimi Machiani snatched a gold medal in the freestyle wrestling at the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday.

The Iranian wrestler defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Magomed Musaev 6-0 in the men’s 97kg.

Karimi beat Japanese Takeshi Yamaguchi 11-0 in quarter-final and defeated Uzbekistan’s Magomed Ibragimov 4-2 in the semi-final.

Magomed Ibragimov and South Korean Kim Jae-gang jointly won the bronze medal.

Hassan Yazdani in 86kg and Reza Atri in 57kg had also won two gold and bronze medals respectively for Iran in the Games.  

The 2018 Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Asian Games and also known as Jakarta Palembang 2018, is a pan-Asian multi-sport event scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

The athletes compete in 465 events across 40 sports and 67 disciplines.

These are the 18th edition of the quadrennial event.
