Japan voices support for nuclear deal
TEHRAN – Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said on Thursday that Tokyo supports the 2015 nuclear deal, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
In phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Kono urged all other parties to remain committed to the multilateral agreement.
In a declaration on Tuesday, President Donald Trump officially withdrew the United States from the nuclear pact. He also said he will reinstate economic sanctions on Iran.
Federica Mogherini, the European Union foreign policy chief, on Tuesday called on the international community to stick to the nuclear deal after Trump pulled out of the UN-endorsed agreement.
British Prime Minister Theresa May, Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron also issued a joint statement on Tuesday saying they will remain committed to the JCPOA.
Russia, one of the signatories of the deal, said it will try to keep the deal functioning despite decision by Trump.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also issued a statement on Tuesday calling on the remaining parties to the nuclear deal to fully observe their commitments.
