TEHRAN – A friendly match between Iran national football team and Syria as part of preparation for the 2018 World Cup has been confirmed.

The Syria media reports suggest that the match will take place in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium on May 11.

Iran met Syria twice in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. The first encounter was held in Malaysia in November 2016 where the match ended in goalless draw.

Iran drew 2-2 with the West Asian team in Tehran in September 2017.

Carlos Queiroz’s men prepare for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where they have been drawn with Spain, Morocco and Portugal in Group B.

Iran will open the campaign with a match against Morocco at Saint Petersburg on June 15.

Team Melli, meanwhile, face Spain in Kazan on 20 June before meeting Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in Saransk five days later.
