Long-term co-op with Turkmenistan on Iran’s agenda, Zarif says

TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Monday that long-term cooperation with Turkmenistan is on Iran’s agenda.

“Iran was the first country that recognized the newly independent (Soviet) republics and it is an honor for us to be beside the Turkmen people and government on the 25th anniversary of establishing relations,” Zarif said during a meeting between Iranian and Turkmen businessmen in Ashgabat.

He said that the two countries have many commonalities and described Turkmenistan’s “development” and “security” as Iran’s development and security.

The foreign minister added Iran has been a “reliable partner” for Turkmenistan since its independence and called for more “strategic ties” between the two countries.

Zarif also highlighted the importance of studying the opportunity for cooperation in oil industry.

Turkmen Foreign Minister Rasit Meredow called Iran an “important business partner”. He said that there are good cooperation in agriculture and energy areas which should be expanded.

He also called for expansion of relations in various spheres especially in industrial area.

Zarif arrived in Ashgabat on Sunday afternoon. He met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow on Monday.

The officials discussed bilateral relations and international issues during their meeting.
