TEHRAN - The 22nd meeting of the Regional Planning Council (RPC) of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) kicked off in Tehran on Monday.
During the 3-day event, six working groups will be set up, according to the Mehr News Agency.
The RPC, composed of the member states’ heads of the planning organizations or such other representatives of corresponding authorities, prepares ECO programs in line with the principles and objectives of regional cooperation.
In September 2011, ECO Secretary General Muhammad Yahya Maroofi said that the organization plans to set up a common trade market among its member states.
“Under the agreement reached between ECO members, the common trade market should be established by 2015,” he noted.
ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey with the aim of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states.
The organization was expanded in 1992 to include seven new members, namely Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
