Bosnian President Appreciates Iran's Support for Kosovar Muslims

SARAJEVO Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic here Friday evening appreciated Iran's support for the rights of Kosovar Muslims and referred to the Islamic Republic as a Muslim country playing a key role in the region. He made the remark in a meeting with the visiting Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Euro-American Affairs Morteza Sarmadi. Expansion of Tehran-Sarajevo political, economic and cultural relations as well as the latest developments regarding the Balkan crisis were major topics reviewed in the meeting.
Briefing the Bosnian president on Iran's stand, Sarmadi, who arrived here Friday, laid emphasis on providing relief supplies to Kosovar refugees and paving the way for their safe return to their homeland. Sarmadi also met with the Bosnian Foreign Minister, Jadranko Prlic, on Friday. At the meeting Prlic said that friendly relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran is a backing for Bosnia-Herzegovina. As to the critical situation in the Balkan region, he said that arrival of a large number of Kosovar refugees in Bosnia-Herzegovina has created numerous economic problems for the country.
Meanwhile, Sarmadi voiced Iran's readiness to promote cooperation with Bosnia. Expressing concern over the critical situation of the Kosovar refugees, he expressed hope that the crisis will be settled to the benefit of the Kosovar Muslims. Briefing Sarmadi on great efforts being made by the Bosnian officials to prevent expansion of the Balkan crisis to other parts of the region, Bosnia-Herzegovina in particular, he appreciated Iran's efforts to establish stability in his country and the Islamic Republic's participation in reconstruction of Bosnia. Expansion of Tehran-Sarajevo economic and technical relations was also reviewed in the meeting.
Meanwhile, Sarmadi yesterday in a meeting with the Bosnian Mufti Mustafa Tiric that Iran is seriously concerned over resumption of war in the region, which has rendered Kosovar people homeless. Tiric said that inspired by Iran and its leadership, which have repeatedly called for restoration of Kosovar Muslims' rights, Bosnian officials have designated a day in Bosnia as the day of help to Kosovar people.
Kosovar people for their part have made active contribution to assisting their Muslim brothren, he added. Sarmadi left Sarajevo on Saturday. In another meeting with Bosnian Prime Minister, Ehdem Bicakcic, Sarmadi said that Iran is willing to mobilize its economic, technical and commercial potential for cooperation with Bosnia. Sarmadi further told prime minister of Bosnian Federation that efforts should be made for implementation of agreements and memoranda of understanding already signed by Iran and Bosnia.
