TEHRAN – Iran’s ambassador to Syria has said that Israel is meddling in Syria in an attempt to make up for the collapse of its close allies in the region.  

“Covert and overt intervention of Israel and its supporters in Syria’s recent developments is aimed at compensating for the damage inflicted on this regime after the downfall of (former Egyptian and Tunisian presidents) Mubarak and Ben Ali,” Ambassador Ahmad Mousavi told the Mehr News Agency on Sunday. 

He also said the unprecedented uprisings of Muslim nations, especially in North Africa, herald the decline of the Zionist regime and the liberation of the occupied holy Qods.  

“The balance of power has changed in favor of Palestine and the resistance axis,” he said. “The foundations of the ignominious Camp David Agreement have become shaky and the Zionist regime is worried about the security of its border with Egypt.” 

The cleric diplomat added, “Israel is no longer an invincible power.” 

MP Kazem Jalali has also commented on Syria, saying that the United States and other Western countries think that resistance is a movement, which is dependent on one or two countries and can be contained through putting pressure on the Syrian government. 

“The resistance movement is rooted in the great awakening of the Islamic ummah,” Jalali, who is the rapporteur of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Sunday. 

He also criticized U.S. President Barack Obama for calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down and said that the adoption of such stances by the Americans is nothing more than making “false democratic gestures.”
