TEHRAN Director General of The Hague-based Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Jose M. Boustani said in Tehran on Saturday Iran is an exemplary state in the campaign against chemical weapons. In a meeting with Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi, Boustani said the Islamic Republic of Iran as a main victim of chemical weapons has undertaken an eminent role in making the world public opinion aware of the threats of chemical weapons.
He hoped that Iran's campaign in this respect would serve the goals of the OPCW. Boustani briefed Kharrazi on the current efforts of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and said the information provided by Iran on chemical weapons (used by Iraq in the course of the Iraqi-imposed war) was welcomed by the third conference of the OPCW member states held recently in The Hague. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a OPCW member state.
He said the OPCW has conducted over 400 inspections in the member states mainly in the U.S., Western Europe and Russia to monitor elimination of chemical weapons. Kharrazi expressed concern over existence of chemical weapons in the Middle East, especially in the occupied Palestine. He emphasized the need for universal application of the convention on prohibition of chemical weapons and indiscriminate observance of the convention.
Kharrazi said the Islamic Republic of Iran follows transparent policy in cooperating with the OPCW to completely eliminate the chemical weapons. (IRNA)
