Historical theater to host opening ceremony of Fajr festival

TEHRAN – Tehran’s Sangelaj Hall, which represents part of the modern history of Iranian theater, will host the opening ceremony of the 34th Fajr International Theater Festival on January 22.
The festival plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the theater, the secretary of the festival, Saeid Asadi, said during a press conference on Tuesday.The theater was established in 1965 and was named “25th Shahrivar Theater”, but the name was later changed to Sangelaj Theater after the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
The Sangelaj Theater was registered on Iran’s National Heritage List in 2008.
Asadi said that the festival consists of several competitive and non-competitive sections dedicated to national and international plays.
Nine foreign plays will be competing in the international section of festival.
German director Thomas Ostermeier will stage William Shakespeare’s masterpiece “Hamlet”, while Marianne Roland from Norway will perform “Hedda Gabler”, Henrik Ibsen’s most performed play, at the festival.
Moreover, several programs have been arranged on the event’s margins, including a poster category, he added.
About 200 theater posters will be competing in the major poster competition, Asadi added.
A number of Iranian and international poster designers will be judging the posters, he concluded.
