TEHRAN - Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, said on Saturday that Iran will continue fighting terrorism and is sure that it will be successful in this campaign.

Iran has played an important role in countering terrorism in the Mideast region and no other country, except Iraq, Syria and Lebanon which are Iran’s allies, has not taken “serious” action in fight against terrorism, he told reporters on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Tehran.

He also said some Western countries are not interested in the Syrian people’s happiness and seek their own objectives in the country.

The Syrian people’s objectives are different from those of some Western countries and the majority of the Syrians support President Bashar al-Assad, he added.

Some Western countries, especially the U.S., as well as some reactionary regimes in the region created a crisis in Syria to undermine the resistance movement against the Zionist regime of Israel, the former foreign minister noted.

“The people witnessed that Bashar al-Assad is still resisting against the foreigners and today, no one can deny this reality,” Velayati said.

On remarks by the U.S. ambassador to the UN that Washington was ""deeply concerned"" by the ballistic missile test by Iran, Velayati said that Iran’s defense strategy is not based on the wishes of the United States.

According to the BBC, the U.S. on Friday claimed that the recent medium range ballistic missile test by Iran was a ""clear violation"" of UN sanctions and a sign of the country's disregard for its international obligations.
