Seminar on Tourism Held in Mashhad

TEHRAN The second seminar on tourism entitled Tourism Revenue Instead of Oil Revenue was held on Friday in Mashhad. The seminar was attended by Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ataollah Mohajerani, a group of Majlis representatives, Minister of Culture and Higher Education Mostafa Moein and Head of Iran Touring and Tourism Organization Moezzedin. According to the Public Relations Department of Iran Touring and Tourism Organization, the seminar was aimed at reviewing practical ways of developing hotel management along with tourism industry in the country.

Speaking at the seminar, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Ataollah Mohajerani, expressed satisfaction with contribution of both public and private sectors to tourism activities, saying that the ground should be prepared for further cooperation of the private sector with the government to promote tourism in the country. He emphasized that the share of private sector in tourism industry and the policies made in this regard should be increased.

Mohajerani underlined that according to UNESCO, the Islamic Republic of Iran is among the first ten countries in the world which possess a variety of tourist attractions. He added that the recent drop in the oil revenue serves as a warning, adding that if other sources of revenue do not replace oil, the country would face serious problems in the future.

The minister of culture and Islamic guidance noted that the required facilities such as tax exemption should be provided for those who want to establish hotels across the country, emphasizing that the needed security should be provided for tourists as well. As for the measures so far taken for development of tourism industry, Mohajerani said that a bill has been submitted to the government aimed at removing the problems facing the tourism sector.

He added that the bill proposes the establishment of a ministry for tourism and cultural heritage. The bill also calls for allocation of 30 billion rials for repairing historical monuments. Meanwhile, Head of Iran Touring and Tourism Organization, Moezzedin, referred to tourism as one of the most important means of recreation and entertainment, adding that it is one of the main sources of revenue.

He went on to say that, currently, there are 50,000 beds in hotels across the country and that, through a well-formulated plan, the hotels would be able to receive three million tourists annually. Moezzedin concluded by saying that the ground should be prepared for development of tourism and called for cooperation of all tourism-related organization in this regard.
