BANDAR ABBAS, Hormuzgan Province The Naval Forces of the Army and the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps (IRGC) staged the tactical phase of the Vahdat-77 (unity-77) war games in the Persian Gulf waters Sunday morning. Spokesman for the maneuvers Issa Golvardi said here yesterday that the drill is aimed at upgrading the combat readiness of the participating forces by using modern equipment.

New communications systems built domestically will be tested at this stage of the war games, said Golvardi. The experiences of eight years of the Sacred Defense (Iraq-Iran war) and regular military exercises have kept the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic in very desirable conditions, he said, adding that preservation of this combat readiness calls for further drills. The five-day maneuvers, which started Friday, covers an area of 20,000 square miles from the Strait of Hormuz and Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman to the middle of the Persian Gulf. (IRNA)
