TEHRAN - Majlis Foreign Policy and National Security Committee Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi has stated that Iran will take legal action against Russia if it fails to deliver the S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran.

Iran can take legal action against Russia and seek damages if Moscow does not honor its contract to deliver the missile system to Iran, Boroujerdi said in Tehran on Sunday.
“We hope Russia abides by its commitments,” he added.
On Wednesday, September 22, Russian Chief of Staff General Nikolai Makarov said, “Russia will not deliver S-300 air defense missiles to Iran as planned because such transfers are prohibited under UN sanctions.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has criticized Russia for its failure to deliver the S-300 missile system to Iran.
Iran expects a different approach from friendly neighboring countries and believes that playing ball with the United States does not serve their interests, he stated on Monday.
This deal “is about a defense system and does not concern UN Resolution 1929,” he added.
Mehmanparast pointed out that Iran had signed the missile system deal with Russia a few years before the United Nations Security Council issued the sanctions resolution against Iran over its nuclear program, and thus Moscow is expected to honor the contract.
However, Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has said that Iran plans to design a long-range anti-aircraft system as an alternative to the Russian S-300 missile system.
At present, a majority of Iranian experts are in favor of the proposal to design a domestically manufactured long-range anti-aircraft system as an alternative to the Russian S-300 missile system, Vahidi told reporters on Sunday.
He went on to say that Russia’s decision to renege on its commitment to deliver the S-300 missile system to Iran has tarnished its reputation on the global stage.
According to a contract signed in 2005, Russia agreed to deliver the S-300 missile system to Iran.
