TEHRAN President Mohammad Khatami underlined that the crisis in Afghanistan is not only a cause of concern for that country's neighbors but what Taleban is doing in the name of Islam is dangerous for the whole region. The president made the remark here yesterday in a meeting with the visiting Tajik Foreign Minister Talbak Nazarov. The president condemned war and bloodshed in Afghanistan, saying that the only solution to end the plight is establishing a broad-based government.
He described as useful cooperation between Iran and Tajikistan in solving regional problems with the assistance of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), the United Nations and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). Referring to historical, cultural and linguistic ties between the two countries, Khatami said that both Iran and Tajikistan as guardians of Persian language and culture should try to attain a remarkable position in international arena through cooperation.
He also pointed to Iran's efforts to establish peace in Tajikistan and stressed that Iran favors a strong, independent and developed Tajikistan, adding that this will not only benefit the Tajik nation but also the regional countries. Under such circumstances, said the Iranian president, conditions will be created for regional economic, cultural and political cooperation. Nazarov expressed satisfaction over his talks with Iranian officials and called for expansion and consolidating of ties between the two countries.
The Tajik foreign minister arrived here Saturday night at the head of a political delegation. The Tajik foreign minister met with his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharrazi on Saturday. In the meeting, the two sides discussed Iran-Tajikistan relations and the situation in neighboring Afghanistan. Kharrazi and Nazarov expressed pleasure over the establishment of regular flights between Mashhad and Dushanbe and voiced their interest for further broadening relations between the two countries.
They also agreed that the only solution to bloodshed in Afghanistan is holding negotiations to form a government with the involvement of all warring groups in that country.
