TEHRAN (FNA)- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir Monday voiced support for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, and said Iran’s growing power is a privilege for Islamic world as it would increase Muslims’ might.
“We (Sudanese) completely support Iran’s legitimate right to access nuclear energy. We believe that Iran’s power will lead to the mightiness of the Muslim world,” President Bashir stressed in a meeting with Iranian parliament and health officials in Khartoum.Iranian Heath Minister Kamran Baqeri Lankarani, heading an Iranian delegation, met with Bashir, and submitted a verbal message from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to his Sudanese counterpart.
Bashir also expressed his satisfaction over Iran’s stance on the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against him, and praised the efforts made by the two countries’ officials to boost bilateral ties.
The Hague-based tribunal has issued an arrest warrant for the Sudanese president. ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has held Bashir responsible for the six-year conflict in Darfur, which the UN says has left 35,000 people killed.
Bashir has rejected allegations, calling the warrant “worthless”.
Iran was the first country opposing the ICC arrest warrant against Omar al-Bashir.
Meantime, Iranian president in his message to Bashir termed the move by the ICC an example of enemy plots against Muslims, and stressed the necessity for unity among Muslim nations.
During his visit to Sudan, the Iranian health minister is slated to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on healthcare cooperation between the two countries.
