Iran calls for UN immediate action to help Gaza

TEHRAN (FNA) – Iran criticized inaction of the United Nations and the Security Council in the face of Israel’s brutalities against the Palestinians and called on the world body to adopt serious and immediate measures to stop Zionists’ ongoing crimes against innocent people in Gaza.

“A nation is gradually diminishing before the eyes of the International Community and efforts by the world nations to help the people in the Gaza Strip are being resisted with the pressure and bullying of the Zionist authorities,” Iran’s Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaee said in his letters to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the president of the Security Council.
“It is very unfortunate that the world in the 21 century is witnessing measures of a criminal regime which safely commits the most terrifying crimes of the history against innocent people,” the letter added.
“The Zionist regime’s repulsive crimes and atrocities against Palestinians particularly in the Gaza Strip have incurred deep wrath of the international community,” Khazaee said in his letter, urging the International Community not to remain silent while thousands of Palestinian women and children are under the Zionists atrocities and waiting for assistance of the global bodies, including the UN.
Khazaee voiced deep concern over the painful situation of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza Strip, reminding that some 1.5 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip have long been suffering from hunger and lack of access to the minimum social services.
Tel Aviv placed the Gaza Strip under a blockade after the democratically-elected Palestinian government, Hamas, took control of the coastal area in mid-June 2007. Palestinians voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Islamic movement in the 2006 parliamentary elections.
The Islamic Hamas movement does not recognize Israel as a legitimate state.
Khazaee said that the Israeli atrocity is equal with violation of international laws and is against the UN Charter, and called for Security Council’s urgent intervention to prevent continued atrocities and war crimes of the Zionist regime in the Gaza Strip.
Khazaee complained that the UN and its Security Council have turned a deaf ear to calls from oppressed people in Gaza to stop Israeli crimes against them, and warned, “Inaction of the United Nations and the Security Council towards the Zionist atrocity would encourage the regime to continue with its crimes and will lead to a threat to those countries sympathizing with the oppressed Palestinian people.”
Meantime, the senior diplomat referred to the letter the Israeli ambassador to UN Gabriela Shalev has submitted to Ban, and said that the Zionist regime has made use of every ploy in order to distract the world’s public opinion from Gaza crisis and has even raised baseless claims against Iran.
Experts say Israel is increasing pressure on Palestinians to hinder their upcoming election. Incumbent Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas’ four-year term expires on January 9.
A recent Israeli National Security Council assessment has urged Tel Aviv to hinder “elections in the Palestinian Authority, even at the cost of a confrontation with the U.S. and the international community.”
