The chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council has warned the Muslim world against overlooking the divisive policies of colonialism.

“For centuries, colonialists have been trying to create divisions in the Muslim world, and till now they have gained a lot from their policy of fomenting discord among Muslims,” said Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani at a Shia mosque in the holy city of Medina on Sunday afternoon.
“Today, unity among the Muslin Ummah (community) is what we need the most,” he added.
Ayatollah Hashemi-Rafsanjani then called on his Saudi Shia and Sunni brothers and sisters and their clerics to avoid trivial disagreements and focus instead on cooperation and unity.
Hashemi-Rafsanjani, who is on a visit to Saudi Arabia, also praised King Abdullah’s efforts to bring various Islamic faiths closer together.
“I hope the move that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques (King Abdullah) has initiated will gain more depth and the talks will lead to a constructive result,” he said.
During his stay in Saudi Arabia as the special guest of the Saudi king, the chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council took part in a three-day international conference on dialogue among Muslims that commenced in the holy city of Mecca on Wednesday.
The summit brought together more than 500 prominent figures from various Muslim countries.
