NEW YORK (Xinhua) -- New York Governor Eliot Spitzer announced on Tuesday that he would be throwing his support behind Hillary Clinton's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, local media reported. Spitzer said Hillary had represented New Yorkers well in Washington and she has "values and strengths that will make her an excellent president."
According to the governor's office, Spitzer will be joined by other key state Democrats on the steps of the Capitol next week, including Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith, to make their support official. In response, a Hillary Clinton campaign spokesman said they were "gratified by the overwhelming support and excitement in New York surrounding Senator Clinton's historic campaign."
Hillary announced her bid for presidency in January and set a record of raising some 26 million dollars in the first quarter of this year.
