BERLIN (AFP) -- Ex-East Germany player and coach Georg Buschner has died at the age of 81, his former club Carl Zeiss Iena announced Monday.

Buschner won six caps for the East Germany national football team between 1954 and 1957, and later coached the team from 1970 to 1981, with a record of 53 wins in 101 matches.

His team qualified for the 1974 World Cup, during which it recorded a historic 1-0 win over West Germany in the first round of matches before going out in the second.
