KATHMANDU (AFP) -- At least 31 people were killed and more than 60 are missing after landslides and floods across Nepal brought on by torrential monsoon rains, officials and local media said.

"Sixty three people are missing and thousands have been displaced due to floods and landslides in the west," Baman Prasad Neupane, the home ministry spokesman told AFP Tuesday morning.

Neupane however said he could not confirm deaths tolls reported in the local media.

According to state-run Nepal Television, nine people died in the remote northern region of Mustang when a landslide swept them off a road construction site.

Another 22 were killed in floods and landslides in western Nepal over the last two days, the Kathmandu Post reported.

Five members of one family were killed in a landslide in Accham district, and some 10,000 had been displaced in Bardiya district, the Post said.

Nepal's home minister visited affected regions in a helicopter Monday and held an emergency rescue and relief meeting in Kathmandu, the English-language daily reported.

The meeting decided to release 28,000 dollars of state funds for two of the worst-hit areas, the newspaper said.

Flooding and landslides have been reported in six districts across western Nepal, but some of the areas had not yet been reached by rescue workers, the Post reported said.

On Monday, police said dozens of villagers were feared dead in western Nepal after a weekend landslide triggered by torrential monsoon rains swept away up to 80 homes around 950 kilometers (593 miles) west of Kathmandu.

Detailed information was unavailable as the village is in a remote area and rescue teams had yet to report, police said.

Monsoon rains that sweep Nepal and the rest of the subcontinent in the summer cause hundreds of deaths every year from flooding and landslides.
