Mehrab Theater to host José Rivera’s “Lessons for an Unaccustomed Bride”
TEHRAN-The play “Lessons for an Unaccustomed Bride” written by the Puerto Rican playwright José Rivera and directed by Niloufar Rafiei will be staged at Mehrab Theater from February 20.
Rafiei also acts in the two-actor play along with Zahra Yaghoubi.
In the one-act play, Rivera paints an aching portrait of small-town life in 1953 Puerto Rico. Two women, their belief systems clashing, are brought together by their unexpected bond.
Rivera incorporates many of his life experiences into his plays. Many of his plays have been translated into several languages. Rivera has contributed as a writer to several TV shows and series.
In 2002, Rivera was hired to write the screenplay for the film “The Motorcycle Diaries” by director Walter Salles. The movie, which was released in 2004, is based on Che Guevara's diary about a motorcycle trip which he and Alberto Granado had, and how it changed their lives. In January 2005, Rivera became the first Puerto Rican to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. His screenplay won awards from the Cinema Writers Circle (Spain) and from the Argentine Film Critics Association; it was also nominated for awards by the American Screenwriters Association, the Online Film Critics Society, and the Writers Guild of America.
The play will remain on stage until March 8 at Mehrab Theater located at the junction of Imam Khomeini and Vali-e Asr streets.
