TEHRAN, Jan.12 (MNA) -- A total of nine million illiterates have been educated since the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Revolution in 1979, head of Yazd Literacy Movement Organization Mahmud Rastegari said here on Monday.

In 1979, over 14 million of the country’s 37 million populations were illiterate, Rastegari said, adding that about 2 million illiterates have been educated for every decade.
Major steps have been taken by the movement toward the eradication of illiteracy over the past years, Rastegari added.
Referring to the difference in the literacy rate in urban and rural areas, he said that the difference has fallen from 34 percent in 1979 to 13 percent in 2006.
He also referred to Yazd province’s literacy rate of 88.4 percent and said, “After the provinces of Tehran and Semnan, Yazd ranks third in raising literacy rate” among 30 provinces of the country.
