altTEHRAN – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday that he is concerned about the disappointing performance of the national football team of Iran, but stated that the team can bounce back since it has been successful at many Asian and international events.

“Football is among the best sports, and we are preparing to advance to the World Cup. Iran football is on the verge of entering important arenas, and the football federation, coaches, and players shoulder heavy responsibilities,” Ahmadinejad said.

“Everyone should help create a calm atmosphere and (an atmosphere) full of confidence, passion, and motivation to help pave the way for qualification for the World Cup. We have to take problems into proper account. There is no justification for attacks on football because it hurts the country’s sports,” he added.

“Our young people should raise our flag with their spirit and hope. Iran is scheduled to face powerful teams, but I believe that our players should keep their cool and stop worrying,” Ahmadinejad stated.
