World Wetlands Day occurs on February 2 every year.

The director of Iran’s Department of the Environment, Mohammad Javad Mohammadizadeh, attended the ceremony.

“Wetlands are in fact a defense shield,” Mohammadizadeh told a gathering of environmentalists and officials of Gilan Province.

He also said that Anzali Lagoon is a lagoon with a surface area of over 15,000 hectares and if it is not protected, it will dry up.

“If wetlands are destroyed, 70 percent of birds will also die,” he said, adding, “It is in fact our duty to live in harmony with the nature.”

He also said the “crimes” that the United States has committed against the environment “are not less than war crimes.”
