TEHRAN – Iran plans to produce 20,000 megawatts of nuclear power in the coming years, Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Director Fereydoun Abbasi said on Thursday.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran, given its forward movement and according to its national plans for future progress, intends to produce about 20,000 megawatts of nuclear-generated electricity,” Abbasi told the 3rd IAEA International High-Level Conference in St Petersburg.
According to a parliamentary ratification, Iran must produce 20,000 megawatts of nuclear energy by 2020.
Iran’s sole nuclear power plant, which is located in the southwestern port city of Bushehr, will produce 1000 megawatts of electricity once it becomes fully operational.
Elsewhere in his speech, Abbasi said that Iran had actively participated in ATOMEXPO 2013, which was organized in the framework of ATOMEXPO 2013 International Industry Forum and opened in St Petersburg on Wednesday.
