Amir-Abdollahian, who is the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, had traveled to Cairo to participate in the meeting of a contact group on Syria comprising Egypt, Iran, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, which was held on Monday.

Brahimi had visited Cairo to hold talks with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and Arab League officials before traveling to Damascus to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Brahimi arrived in the Syrian capital on Thursday.

During his meeting with Brahimi, Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran supports the reform plan being implemented by the Syrian government and emphasized that the shipment of weapons for irresponsible armed rebels in Syria should be stopped.

Brahimi thanked Iran for accepting Egypt’s invitation to attend the quartet meeting and described it as an important step.
