Global Sumud Flotilla sets sail from Tunisia to break Gaza blockade

September 15, 2025 - 18:20

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a multinational maritime convoy tasked with breaking the Israeli blockade of Gaza, has embarked on its mission from Tunisia amid heightened tensions and recent attacks on its vessels. The flotilla departed from three Tunisian ports — Bizerte, Gammarth, and Sidi Bou Said — between September 14 and 15, 2025, carrying activists and humanitarian aid from over 40 countries.

The convoy comprises around sixteen ships, including notable participants such as climate activist Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, and Barcelona’s former Mayor Ada Colau, and elected officials from Italy and other European countries. The ships are loaded with vital food supplies and medical aid intended to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has faced nearly 18 years of blockade resulting from widespread shortages and starvation.

Earlier this month, two flotilla vessels anchored in Tunisian waters were reportedly targeted by aerial incendiary attacks, suspected to have been launched by drones. The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior acknowledged "premeditated aggression" and confirmed launching an investigation, though initial statements varied regarding the cause of the onboard fires. No injuries were reported during these incidents, but they delayed the flotilla’s departure.

Despite these obstacles, the Global Sumud Flotilla organizers and participants remain determined to peacefully challenge the blockade. Their stated objective is to establish a humanitarian corridor to Gaza where millions face severe shortages of basic necessities due to the ongoing siege and repeated Israeli military assaults.

Israeli officials have condemned the flotilla as a threat to national security, with Israel’s Minister of National Security claiming flotilla members should face detention, while alleging ties between the flotilla and groups like Hamas. These accusations have been firmly rejected by the flotilla organizers as intimidation and misrepresentation, emphasizing their legal and peaceful humanitarian mission under international law.

The convoy will continue its journey, aiming to link up with additional vessels from Italy, Spain, and Greece to form the largest coalition-based flotilla ever attempted. Their passage is closely watched by international observers and human rights groups calling for safe passage and protection of humanitarian activists.

The Global Sumud Flotilla’s voyage symbolizes global solidarity with the people of Gaza and the urgent call to lift the maritime blockade that has severely restricted access to essential aid for decades. Participants affirm that civil society action remains crucial when governmental entities fail to uphold human rights and humanitarian principles.
