altTEHRAN – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that the establishment of a Palestinian government on part of the Palestinian homeland does not mean that the Palestinians will relinquish their title to all of the occupied territories.

Ahmadinejad made the remarks during an interview with Al Jazeera’s correspondent in New York on Saturday in reference to Acting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ bid for recognition of a Palestinian state, which was submitted to the United Nations on September 23.

“Finally, the United States and this country’s allies came to the conclusion that the Zionist regime cannot survive and has reached the end of the line. Therefore, they are compelled to recognize a Palestinian government,” Ahmadinejad stated.

He added, “Certain governments raised the issue of the establishment of a Palestinian government as a historical tactic to create an opportunity to save the Zionist regime.”

“But this tactic will undoubtedly not help save the Zionist regime because the Middle East region will not accept the irregular patch of the Zionist regime and will reject it,” he stated.

Ahmadinejad also said, “The hegemonistic powers… are compelled to recognize a Palestinian government, but they are seeking to make the most of the situation.”

“The Palestinian nation existed before and during World War II, so the establishment of an entity named Palestinian government is a weird issue. The Palestinians have the right to have their own government and exercise sovereignty. However, the international structures and certain powers have deprived them of this right,” he stated.

“The Palestinian nation has existed like a flowing river throughout history and will continue to exist, and if the UN does not recognize it, it (will mean that it) has actually made a departure from its original mission.

“Even if certain current Palestinian leaders do not restore their nation’s right, leaders will emerge in the future who will restore their right.”

Ahmadinejad added, “The Palestinian nation cannot be wiped off history, and the 65 years of efforts that colonialist powers have made in this regard have been futile.”

The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the Palestinians deserve more than what is supposed to be given to them, he stated.

“(However,) the establishment of a Palestinian government after years of combat, is a step toward the fulfillment of the nation’s right,” the Iranian president said.

Iran has favorable relations with Palestinian groups

On Tehran’s stance toward various Palestinian political groups, Ahmadinejad stated, “Iran supports the causes of the Palestinian nation and has always invited Palestinian groups to maintain unity since we believe that the realization of a great cause depends on unity.”

Iran has “favorable” relations with Palestinian groups and “Mahmoud Abbas’ government has embassy in Iran, and other groups have also representatives (in the country),” he added.

Israel dares not attack Iran

Asked about the possibility of a military attack against Iran by the Zionist regime, Ahmadinejad said, “The Iranian nation is not at all concerned over military threats.”

“However, the Zionist regime and its masters are very keen to attack Iran and deal a blow to Iran and have drawn up plans to this end, but they are afraid of the Iranian nation’s response,” he added.
