altTEHRAN – The Middle East’s first super heavy oil refinery will be constructed in Iran’s Qeshm island in the Persian Gulf.

The refinery will have the capacity of refining up to 30,000 barrels of oil per day, the Mehr news agency reported on Tuesday.

The recoverable light crude reserves of Iran have been declining in recent years.

At present, Iran’s recoverable oil reserves are estimated at over 150 billion barrels and the volume of recoverable heavy and super heavy crude has reached over 70 billion barrels.

Currently, many light crude oil fields such as Ahwaz, Maroun, Aghajari, Bibi-Hakimeh, Gachsaran, and Pazanan are in the second half of their age.
