SHANGHAI A man wanted for murder killed a hostage and then committed suicide with a hand grenade rather than surrender to police after a 12-hour stand-off in southern China, the Wenhui daily reported on Monday. Police tried to capture Xing Jinyuan, wanted for involvement in a 1993 murder and robbery case, after locating him in the city of Shantou on Saturday, the official newspaper said.

The 25-year-old Xing, armed with a pistol and a grenade, ran into a restaurant, took seven people hostage and held nearly 100 police at bay for several hours. (Reuter)
