TEHRAN Though the controversy exists, but chances for Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri are brighter for retaining the seat of Majlis Speaker, said a lawmaker yesterday. Seyed Hussein Mara'ashi, allied with the faction closer to President Seyed Mohammad Khatami said, The claim that all factions in the Majlis support the candidacy of Mr. Nateq-Nouri carries no weight. The Parliament or the Majlis elects the Presiding Board of the Majlis including speaker for one year.

The current term of Nateq-Nouri, his deputies and secretary will expire next month. No date has been announced but it is believed that the election for the Presiding Board will be held in two-weeks time. There are two major factions in 270-member Majlis including pro-Khatami Hezbollah and pro-Nateq-Nouri Majme Hezbollah. No specific number of each faction is available. There are around 70 deputies who follow an independent policy.

Only that faction will succeed which will introduce a candidate having more sociable and trustworthy character, Mara'ashi, representative of the Kerman Constituency said. He talked to the media persons after a closed-door session of the Majlis held yesterday. No immediate details of the proceedings of the closed-door session are available, but it is believed that the issue of the next speaker was on the table.

Commenting further on the election of the speaker, Mara'ashi said, The deputies will not make decisions about the speaker on the basis of political trends. The composition of the Majlis is such that only right persons will sit at the Presiding Board of the Majlis, Mara'ashi who heads the Post, Telegraph and Telephone Committee of the Majlis said. He said around 70 members of the Majlis are independent and their votes for the election of the Presiding Board of the Majlis will be decisive.

The elections of the Majlis Presiding Board are crucial for all the deputies, he said. Mara'ashi denied rumors that he was due to replace Tehran Mayor Gholamhussein Karbaschi and said, I don't think a change at the top post of civic body is underway.
